R-Rated Film Will Explore Rap Icon’s Rise From Long Beach to Global Fame
A biographical film about hip-hop legend Snoop Dogg is officially heading to cinemas in 2027, with Universal Pictures announcing a release date for the highly anticipated project.
The R-rated movie, titled “Snoop,” will arrive on August 6, 2027, and will tell the story of the rapper’s journey from his early days in Long Beach, California, to becoming one of the most influential figures in global music and entertainment.
The film marks the first feature project under Death Row Pictures’ major multi-year partnership with NBCUniversal, highlighting Snoop Dogg’s expanding influence beyond music.
Universal Pictures is hoping the project can follow the success of previous music biopics, including the blockbuster hit “Straight Outta Compton,” which explored the rise of rap group N.W.A.
Jonathan Daviss to Play Young Snoop Dogg
Taking on the role of the legendary rapper will be Jonathan Daviss, best known for his role in Netflix’s hit series “Outer Banks.”
Daviss has received approval from Snoop Dogg himself to portray the rapper during his early career in the 1990s, a defining period that transformed him into a global superstar.
The movie will focus on Snoop’s breakthrough years, including his introduction to the world through Dr. Dre’s iconic album “The Chronic” and the release of his legendary debut album “Doggystyle.”
These moments helped establish Snoop Dogg as one of the most recognizable voices in hip-hop history.
Craig Brewer Takes Directorial Role
The film will be directed by Craig Brewer, who is known for his work on the acclaimed hip-hop drama “Hustle & Flow.”
Brewer has also rewritten the original screenplay draft created by Joe Robert Cole, who co-wrote “Black Panther.”
The production team includes Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer, Death Row Pictures president Sara Ramaker, and Snoop Dogg himself.
The rapper has promised fans an authentic and unfiltered story, confirming that the film will carry an R-rating to reflect the realities of his early life and career.
Speaking at CinemaCon, Snoop said that after other artists had the opportunity to tell their stories, it was finally his turn to share his own journey.

The film is expected to feature some of Snoop Dogg’s biggest hits, including tracks such as “Gin and Juice” and “Drop It Like It’s Hot.”
Snoop also praised Brewer’s filmmaking style, saying the director understands how to bring hip-hop culture and storytelling together.
The rapper highlighted Brewer’s previous work in “Hustle & Flow” and his ability to capture music-driven stories.
Beyond the upcoming biopic, Snoop Dogg continues to expand his entertainment career. He is also set to return as a coach on the popular singing competition show “The Voice.”
