France and Italy Battle Deadly Blazes as Europe Faces Extreme Fire Risk
Around 12,000 people have been evacuated from south-western France as firefighters continue battling massive wildfires that have destroyed thousands of hectares of land.
Authorities in the Gironde region said more than 2,000 hectares of forest and vegetation have already been burned as the fires continue to spread.
Officials have introduced emergency restrictions, including banning the use of internal combustion and electric engines in heavily forested areas to reduce the risk of new fires.
Several roads have also been closed as emergency services work to contain the flames.
No new injuries were reported on Thursday, but the region remains on high alert.
France Pays Tribute to Fallen Firefighters
The latest fires come just days after two French firefighters lost their lives while responding to wildfires near Bordeaux Airport.
France’s Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez paid tribute to the firefighters during a memorial event, expressing gratitude for their service and offering condolences to their families.
He described the ceremony as an emotional moment and praised the bravery and dedication of emergency responders risking their lives to protect communities.
According to reports, around 10,000 of those evacuated are tourists who were visiting the affected areas.
The Gironde region remains under a red alert, with several leisure and recreational sites in forested areas temporarily closed.
Italy Mourns Firefighter Killed in Sicily
In neighbouring Italy, authorities are also dealing with devastating wildfires.
Firefighter Alessandro Marchi died while battling a blaze in San Cataldo, prompting tributes from government officials.
Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi praised Marchi’s service, saying he died while protecting the community and would never be forgotten.
Sicily’s President Renato Schifani also wished another injured firefighter a speedy recovery.
According to Sicily’s Civil Protection Agency, more than 350 fires have been recorded across the island, including at least ten major wildfires that forced precautionary evacuations.
Officials believe many of the fires were caused by human activity.
Europe Faces Rising Wildfire Threat
Spain is also experiencing dangerous wildfire conditions.
Emergency crews continue to battle a blaze near Madrid, where firefighters, helicopters, and nearly 90 emergency personnel remain deployed.
Although many evacuated residents have been allowed to return home, authorities continue monitoring one area in Villa del Prado where the fire remains active.
Spain’s weather agency has warned of temperatures reaching up to 36 degrees Celsius, increasing the risk of more fires.
The latest emergencies come as Europe continues to experience prolonged heatwaves linked to rising global temperatures.
Scientists have identified Europe as the world’s fastest-warming continent, with record-breaking temperatures, wildfire emissions, and burned land recorded in recent years.
As firefighters continue working across France, Italy, and Spain, authorities are urging residents and visitors to follow safety advice and remain alert as extreme weather conditions persist.
