David Owori’s death sparks grief and renewed calls for action against violent crime
Uganda is mourning the death of football captain David Owori, who was fatally attacked near his home in Kampala at the age of 27.
Police said Owori was assaulted by suspected robbers after resisting an attempt to steal his mobile phone and other belongings. His death has triggered widespread grief among football fans, teammates and politicians, while also renewing concerns about violent crime in the Ugandan capital.
Owori was captain of SC Villa, Uganda Premier League’s record champions, where he played as both a right-back and midfielder. He also represented the national team, the Cranes.
Attack outside his home
Witnesses said a group of attackers assaulted Owori on Tuesday night before taking his belongings and fleeing the scene.
The footballer was reportedly attacked shortly after arriving near his home in Makindye, a suburb of Kampala.
SC Villa spokesperson Asan Kasingye said Owori was ambushed as he approached his home, suffering serious injuries before being taken for medical treatment.
He was initially rushed to a nearby clinic before being transferred to a private medical facility in Kampala. However, he died from his injuries on Wednesday.
Police spokesperson Rachael Kawala said detectives were investigating the incident and working to identify those responsible.
She said investigators had documented and processed the scene to collect and preserve evidence.
Tributes pour in
Owori’s death has sent shockwaves through Uganda’s football community, with fans and teammates demanding justice.
SC Villa said the club had lost more than a footballer, describing Owori as a leader, brother and friend.
The Federation of Uganda Football Associations also paid tribute to the defender, describing him as a leader and inspiration both on and off the pitch.
Uganda’s national team, the Cranes, said the country had lost a football star who carried the hopes of Ugandan supporters.
Parliament observed a minute’s silence in his honour and called for a swift investigation into his death.
Successful football career
Popularly known as “Colgate”, Owori was regarded as one of Uganda’s promising footballers. His tactical discipline and ability to play in different positions made him an important member of the SC Villa squad.
He returned to the club in 2023 after spending two years playing in Europe, beginning a second spell with the team.
Owori helped SC Villa win the Uganda Premier League title in 2024, securing the club’s record 17th top-flight championship and its first league title in 20 years.
His performances and leadership earned him a contract extension that was due to keep him at the club until January 2027.
He had also represented Uganda during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign and was considered a strong candidate for future national team selections.
Anger over violent crime
Owori’s killing has sparked anger across social media, with many Ugandans calling for stronger action against violent criminals in Kampala.
His death comes only weeks after another Ugandan sports figure, rugby international Sydney Gongodyo, was reportedly fatally attacked by a mob in Kampala.
The two deaths have intensified concerns about violence affecting Uganda’s sporting community and the wider public.
As police continue their investigation, Owori’s family, teammates and supporters are demanding that those responsible for his death be brought to justice.
