Afrobeat musician Femi Kuti has argued that President Bola Tinubu is not Nigeria’s biggest problem, pointing instead to what he describes as deeply rooted institutional corruption.
Speaking on the Good News Naija podcast, Kuti said Nigeria’s challenges were systemic and extended across institutions responsible for governance and accountability.
He questioned how Tinubu was able to contest the presidency if the allegations previously made against him were accurate, arguing that a stronger and more independent judicial system would have addressed such concerns before the election.
“Do you think Tinubu is the problem?” Kuti asked, arguing that the institutions that allowed him to contest were themselves part of the problem.
He said Nigeria needed people with integrity and strong ethical standards in positions of authority, rather than a political and institutional system dominated by what he described as a corrupt elite.
According to Kuti, corruption has become so entrenched across different sectors that changing individual political leaders alone would not solve the country’s problems.
He also warned that the persistence of systemic corruption could undermine the hopes and aspirations of young Nigerians.
Kuti’s comments come amid continuing public debate over governance, accountability and institutional reform in Africa’s most populous country. His remarks focused on the need to strengthen institutions and ensure that public officials are subject to effective scrutiny and accountability.
