Lionesses welcomed by jubilant fans after winning African title
Cameroon’s women’s football team received a heroes’ welcome in Yaoundé after winning the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations with a 3-0 victory over debutants Malawi.
Hundreds of excited supporters gathered outside Yaoundé’s international airport on Monday to celebrate the Lionesses’ triumph.
Fans celebrate victory
Supporters cheered as the players arrived, with many praising the team’s performance throughout the tournament.
One fan, Lyndsay Tango, said she had followed the team from the opening match and was delighted to see their progress.
Victory inspires women
The team’s success also carried a wider message for many Cameroonian women.
Supporter Arlette Missilisem said the victory showed that women could achieve much more than traditional expectations placed on them.
She described the triumph as a source of pride and inspiration for young women across Cameroon.
Stars attend final
FIFA president Gianni Infantino and CAF president Patrice Motsepe attended the final and later helped present medals to the top three teams.
Cameroon forward Monique Ngock was also recognised as the tournament’s Player of the Tournament.
