Dakar-born France legend returns home to rebuild the national team
Senegal have appointed former Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira as their new head coach, turning to the Dakar-born football legend to rebuild the national team following a disappointing World Cup campaign.
The Senegalese Football Federation confirmed Vieira’s appointment after an emergency committee meeting, describing it as a strategic move to strengthen the team’s technical structure.
Vieira’s football career
The 50-year-old replaces Pape Thiaw, who was dismissed after Senegal’s World Cup campaign ended with a 3-2 extra-time defeat to Belgium in the round of 32.
Born in Dakar in 1976, Vieira moved to France at the age of eight and went on to earn 107 international caps. He won the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000 with France.
Arsenal legend
Vieira became one of Arsenal’s greatest players during his nine-year spell at the club, winning three Premier League titles and captaining the famous unbeaten “Invincibles” side of 2003-04.
He also played for Juventus, Inter Milan and Manchester City before moving into management with New York City FC in 2016.
His managerial career has included spells at Nice, Crystal Palace, Strasbourg and Genoa. Senegal will be his first international coaching role.
Senegal’s recent troubles
Vieira inherits a team dealing with the fallout from a turbulent period under Thiaw.
Senegal’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title was later overturned by CAF after players and staff left the pitch during the final against Morocco. Morocco was subsequently awarded the trophy, while Senegal appealed the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
A major challenge ahead
Vieira’s immediate task will be preparing Senegal for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, which begin in September.
The Lions of Teranga have been drawn alongside Mozambique, Sudan and Ethiopia.
The former France international will also be expected to restore confidence and stability to a team whose recent achievements have been overshadowed by controversy.
For Vieira, the appointment represents a significant homecoming as he returns to the country of his birth to lead Senegal into a new chapter.
