Drama intensifies in Season 12

The latest season of the reality competition combines physical challenges, mental tests and strategic decisions as contestants compete for the R1 million prize. Potelwa has returned as host, guiding viewers through the competition’s tense moments and emotional Sunset Ceremonies. She described hosting the long-running show as a privilege, praising the cast and production team for making the experience memorable.

Contestants show determination and emotion

Potelwa said she has been surprised by the contestants’ commitment and the relationships forming between them. She highlighted their determination, emotional moments and affection for their teammates, saying the season has shown plenty of heart alongside the competitive spirit. The presenter believes the mix of ambition and genuine connections has helped make the competition engaging.

Balancing personalities and difficult decisions

Potelwa said hosting requires knowing when to keep things light and when to take a serious approach. She credited her mother’s fun-loving but firm personality with helping her find that balance. She also praised the contestants for respecting the competition and its production team. However, the Sunset Ceremonies remain emotional, as each participant has personal reasons for wanting to win, whether seeking a fresh start or pursuing sporting ambitions.

Trust and strategy shape alliances

As teams compete for a place in the finale, Potelwa believes choosing reliable allies is essential. She said contestants must look beyond friendship and consider who they can trust to help them progress through the challenges. Although bonds develop during the show, she stressed that strategic decisions ultimately determine which teams advance.

More surprises ahead on Réunion Island

Potelwa has warned viewers not to expect a predictable competition, promising further twists and unexpected developments. She also praised Réunion Island’s scenery, beaches, volcanoes and food, particularly its French-inspired pastries. Despite the destination’s holiday appeal, she said she sometimes had to remind herself that she was there for work.

Potelwa plans new projects

Outside the show, Potelwa is continuing to develop her clothing line, planning more hosting engagements and working on a new venture with her best friend, Candice Sello. She also highlighted podcast plans and projects including 5 Drive Gets High for 5FM as part of her ambitions for the end of 2026.

Tropika Island of Treasure airs on Wednesdays at 9pm on SABC 1, with a repeat on Thursdays at 6pm on S3.
