At least 64 people have been killed and dozens more seriously injured after two high-speed trains collided in Spain, in one of the country’s deadliest railway disasters in more than a decade.

The collision occurred south of Madrid on Wednesday, 28 October, involving trains operated by Spanish national rail company Renfe and private operator Iryo. The accident has prompted a major emergency response as rescue workers search the wreckage and assist survivors.

Regional government officials confirmed the updated death toll, while authorities said more than 500 passengers had been travelling on the two trains when the collision occurred.

The tragedy has drawn comparisons with Spain’s August 2013 train disaster, in which 80 people died after a train derailed in north-western Spain.

Emergency response underway

Rail infrastructure operator Adif confirmed that the collision involved a Renfe train and an Iryo service operating on the Madrid-Seville route.

Emergency services were dispatched to the scene as authorities worked to rescue injured passengers and establish the full circumstances surrounding the crash.

The collision triggered widespread disruption to rail services, with the high-speed line connecting Madrid and the southern region of Andalusia suspended in both directions.

Firefighters, police officers, medical personnel and other emergency responders were involved in the rescue operation. Authorities were also working to assess the severity of injuries and identify those affected by the disaster.

A 17-year-old passenger who survived the crash described the scene as chaotic, telling a Spanish broadcaster that the incident had been a catastrophe.

The extent of the damage and the number of people seriously injured have raised concerns about the scale of the emergency, as families await information about passengers who were aboard the trains.

Spanish prime minister responds

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said he was shocked by the serious train accident and confirmed that he was maintaining contact with the transport minister.

The government is monitoring developments as emergency teams continue their work at the scene.

Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances that led to the collision, including the movements of both trains before the impact. The cause of the crash has not yet been established.

The tragedy has once again placed railway safety under scrutiny in Spain, where high-speed rail services connect major cities and carry millions of passengers annually.

Rail services disrupted

Adif confirmed that high-speed services between Madrid and Andalusia had been suspended following the collision.

The disruption is expected to affect passengers travelling along one of Spain’s principal rail corridors, including those heading towards Seville and other southern destinations.

Rail operators are working with authorities to respond to the incident and manage the consequences for affected travellers.

With rescue and recovery efforts continuing, officials face the immediate challenge of supporting the injured, identifying victims and providing information to families.

Questions over railway safety

The crash is being described as one of Spain’s worst railway disasters since the 2013 derailment near Santiago de Compostela, which killed 80 people and injured more than 140 others.

That disaster led to renewed scrutiny of railway operations and safety procedures across the country.

Investigators will now seek to determine what caused Wednesday’s collision and whether any failures contributed to the loss of life.

For now, the focus remains on emergency operations and supporting those affected by the tragedy. As authorities continue to assess the situation, further information is expected to emerge about the victims, the injured and the circumstances surrounding the crash.
