Award-winning singer returns to gospel roots with a heartfelt tribute inspired by faith, family and tradition
South African gospel singer Brenda Mtambo is preparing to take audiences on an emotional journey with her upcoming stage production and album, “Amahubo Ka Gogo”, a project inspired by the woman who shaped her childhood through music, prayer and discipline.
The production, which premieres at the Theatre of Marcellus at Emperors Palace in Johannesburg on July 18, is more than a live performance. It is a tribute to Mtambo’s late grandmother and the generations of women who preserved faith, culture and family traditions through song.
Mtambo described the project as deeply personal, saying it was created to honour the memories and lessons passed down by her grandmother.
“Amahubo Ka Gogo” draws inspiration from the hymns, prayers and spiritual songs that filled Mtambo’s early years. Through the production, she hopes audiences will reconnect with their own memories, faith and the people who played important roles in shaping their lives.
The stage show also marks Mtambo’s return to gospel music and serves as a preview of her upcoming album, which carries the same title.
For years, fans have called on the celebrated vocalist to return to the gospel sound that first introduced many people to her powerful voice. With this project, Mtambo brings together traditional hymns, African musical influences, fresh arrangements and personal storytelling.
The production promises an evening of live music, reflection and celebration, featuring powerful vocals supported by a live band. It aims to highlight South Africa’s rich spiritual and musical heritage while creating an emotional connection between performers and audiences.
Mtambo first gained national recognition during her time with gospel group Joyous Celebration, where her distinctive voice became one of the group’s memorable sounds. She later established herself as a successful solo artist with popular songs including “Ungenzela Konke Okuhle”, “Ixesha Lami”, “Themba Njalo”, “I Love You” and “Mhlaba Wethu”.
Throughout her career, Mtambo has remained connected to themes of faith, resilience and hope, making “Amahubo Ka Gogo” a natural continuation of her artistic journey.
The production reflects not only her personal story but also the experiences of many South Africans who grew up surrounded by songs of worship, family gatherings and spiritual guidance.
Following its Johannesburg debut, “Amahubo Ka Gogo” will move to Durban, where it will be staged at the Playhouse Company Opera Theatre on August 15.
