The protest was set up by the C64 group, which is asking Tshisekedi to stop the changes.

Tshisekedi became president in 2019. Won again in 2023. With the rules he cannot run for a third term.

The protests are happening two years before the election as tensions between the government and the opposition keep getting worse.

In the parliament, where the ruling group has seats they have approved a plan to make the presidents time in office longer. The changes would need to be approved by a vote before they can be used.

Earlier the government stopped a protest in Kinshasa in July about the change. The United Nations reported that least one person died and several people from the opposition were hurt during fights.

The government also said there will be a conversation in July, which is what the opposition has asked for a long time. Officials have not said what the conversation will be about.

The discussion about the constitution is happening while the Democratic Republic of Congo is still dealing with problems in the east.

The M23 group, which is supported by Rwanda took over a lot of land year. This has made the political and security situation harder, for Tshisekedi’s government.
