Chelsea Midfielder Praises Team Despite Defeat and Post-Match Incidents
Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez has defended the national team’s conduct during the 2026 World Cup, insisting the squad represented the country “in the best possible way” despite criticism following their defeat to Spain.
Spain secured a 1-0 victory after extra time in Sunday’s final in New Jersey, denying Argentina another World Cup title.
Fernandez was sent off late in normal time after receiving two yellow cards. His first booking came after he protested a decision by Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic, while his second followed a challenge on Spain defender Pau Cubarsi.
However, in a statement shared on social media, the Chelsea midfielder focused on Argentina’s overall journey rather than the controversial moments.
“For years, this group has represented the team in the best possible way. It teaches that competing isn’t just about winning; it’s about giving your all for the jersey and never giving up,” Fernandez wrote.
He added that it was a privilege to be part of a team that competed with pride, humility and commitment.
Fifa Investigates Post-Final Clash
Argentina’s defeat was followed by tense scenes as some players and members of the coaching staff became involved in altercations with Spain players during their celebrations.
Fifa has opened an investigation into the incidents, with its disciplinary committee appointing a prosecutor to review the events.
Players including Nahuel Molina, Leandro Paredes and Thiago Almada, as well as assistant coach Roberto Ayala, appeared to be involved in confrontations.
Paredes was accused of pushing Spain’s Eric Garcia during the incident, while Almada was involved in a clash after Spain midfielder Gavi attempted to intervene.
If found guilty, players or officials involved could face suspensions, while the Argentine Football Association may also receive a financial penalty.
Questions Surround Messi’s Future
Beyond the on-field controversy, attention has also turned to Lionel Messi’s future with the national team.
Speculation has grown over whether the final could have been Messi’s last World Cup appearance after the Argentine captain was seen in tears following the defeat.
Unverified footage shared by Argentine media appeared to show Messi speaking to teammates before the match, urging them to remain calm and focus only on the game.
“Let’s just concentrate on playing, nothing else,” Messi appeared to say in the footage.
The 39-year-old has not confirmed whether he will continue representing Argentina internationally.
Scaloni Calls For Grace In Defeat
Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni attempted to calm the situation after the match, saying his team understood how to accept defeat.
“We are gracious in victory, and we must be gracious in defeat,” Scaloni said.
He praised his players for their achievements throughout the tournament, despite falling short in the final.
Argentina had enjoyed a strong World Cup campaign, winning their first seven matches before losing to Spain.
Their run included dramatic victories over Egypt and England, with Fernandez scoring during the comeback win against the Three Lions in the semi-final.
Argentina Fans Welcome Team Home
Despite the disappointing ending, thousands of supporters gathered in Buenos Aires to welcome the team home.
Scaloni and 16 members of the 26-player squad returned to Argentina and received a hero’s reception at Ezeiza International Airport.
Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, who produced several important saves during the final, was among the returning players.
Messi, however, returned to Miami, where he plays club football for Inter Miami.
The defeat has sparked debate over the future of Argentina’s golden generation, with questions surrounding both Messi’s international career and Scaloni’s position as manager.
