Strikes

Airlines across Europe, Asia and the Middle East have cancelled or diverted flights after US and Israeli strikes on Iran triggered retaliatory attacks across the Gulf.

Airspace over Iran, Israel, Iraq, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Syria and the United Arab Emirates remains closed, with partial restrictions in Saudi Arabia. The widespread shutdown has disrupted long-haul routes between Europe and Asia.

Major Airlines Suspend Operations

British Airways and Virgin Atlantic have grounded multiple services. British Airways cancelled flights to Tel Aviv and Bahrain until Wednesday and warned routes to Abu Dhabi, Doha and Dubai could be disrupted for days.

Emirates suspended operations in and out of Dubai temporarily, while Etihad Airways halted departures from Abu Dhabi.
Qatar Airways confirmed a temporary suspension of flights to and from Doha due to airspace closures.

Numerous other carriers — including Lufthansa, KLM, Air India, Turkish Airlines and Wizz Air — have either cancelled or rerouted services.

Heathrow Airport has urged travellers to check directly with their airlines before heading to the airport.

Casualties and Airport Disruptions

One person was killed and 11 injured at airports in Dubai and Abu Dhabi amid the regional escalation. Qatar and the UAE said they intercepted Iranian missiles and drones, while explosions were reported in multiple Gulf cities.

Passengers described chaotic scenes. Some flights were turned around mid-journey, while others were held on tarmacs for hours as pilots awaited clearance.

Travel Warnings Expanded

The UK Foreign Office has issued updated guidance:

  • Advising against all travel to Israel and Palestine

  • Warning against all but essential travel to Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait and the UAE

  • Urging UK nationals in Saudi Arabia to remain indoors

  • Telling British citizens across Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, Turkey and Oman to stay vigilant

Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed UK aircraft were operating in a defensive capacity in the region, while US President Donald Trump said the strikes followed failed negotiations over Iran’s nuclear programme.

The situation remains fluid, with further disruptions expected as the regional conflict continues to unfold.
