French DJ Kavinsky Dies at 50 After Global Success With Nightcall
French electronic music star Kavinsky, whose real name was Vincent Belorgey, has died at the age of 50 at his home in Paris, leaving fans and musicians around the world mourning the loss of one of France’s most influential electro artists.
The DJ and electro-house musician became internationally recognised for his 2010 hit song “Nightcall,” which gained global attention after featuring in the opening credits of the 2011 neo-noir crime film Drive, starring Ryan Gosling.
The track became a defining song of the modern synthwave movement, blending electronic sounds with a nostalgic 1980s-inspired style. Years after its release, “Nightcall” experienced another surge in popularity when Kavinsky performed the song during the closing ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Following the Olympic performance, the track became the most Shazamed song in a single day in the history of the music identification platform, proving its lasting impact across generations.
Tributes quickly poured in following news of Kavinsky’s death. French President Emmanuel Macron described the musician as “a source of French pride forever,” celebrating his contribution to the country’s global music reputation.
France’s Culture Minister Catherine Pégard also paid tribute, saying the country had lost one of its most unique musical voices. She praised Kavinsky’s ability to connect audiences worldwide through his iconic sound.
The Paris prosecutor’s office confirmed that Kavinsky was found dead at his residence in the French capital. Authorities have opened an investigation to determine the exact cause of death.
French media reported that the musician had complained of headaches in the days before his death, with authorities investigating the possibility of a medical emergency. First responders reportedly found no suspicious circumstances at the scene.
Born in Seine-Saint-Denis, near Paris, Vincent Belorgey was a self-taught pianist who began his music career in the early 2000s. He gained early recognition by performing alongside French electronic music pioneers such as Daft Punk.
Kavinsky became known not only as a musician but also through his fictional red-eyed zombie DJ character, which became part of his artistic identity. He was considered one of the key figures in the second wave of France’s influential “French Touch” electronic music movement, alongside artists such as Justice and Sebastian.
His famous track “Nightcall” was created with contributions from Daft Punk’s Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, mixed by Sebastian and featuring vocals from Brazilian singer Lovefoxxx.
At the Paris 2024 Olympics closing ceremony, Belgian singer Angèle performed a memorable version of the song alongside Kavinsky and French band Phoenix, introducing the iconic track to a new global audience.
Kavinsky’s unique style, cinematic sound and unforgettable performances helped shape electronic music for more than two decades. His legacy will continue through the generations of artists and fans inspired by his work.
