Ghanaian footballer Dominic Frimpong killed after armed attackers open fire on team bus

A tragic incident has shaken Ghana’s football community after young footballer Dominic Frimpong was killed when armed attackers opened fire on a team bus.

Frimpong, a 20-year-old player for Berekum Chelsea, lost his life following an ambush on the team’s bus as they returned from a Ghana Premier League match. According to club officials, the attack occurred on Sunday as the team travelled back home after a 1-0 defeat to Samartex in Samreboi, a journey of about 270 kilometres.

The club described the attackers as masked men armed with guns and assault rifles who blocked the road before launching the assault. As the driver attempted to reverse the vehicle to escape, the gunmen opened fire, forcing players and staff to flee into nearby bushes for safety.

Frimpong sustained gunshot wounds during the attack and was rushed for medical treatment. Sadly, he later died from his injuries, leaving teammates, fans, and the wider football community in deep shock.

Ghana Police have since launched a manhunt for the suspects, confirming that approximately six armed individuals were involved in the нападение. Authorities say additional personnel and crime scene experts have been deployed to the area, with assurances that those responsible will be brought to justice.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) expressed profound grief over the incident, describing Frimpong as a promising young talent whose passion and dedication reflected the spirit of Ghanaian football. The association extended condolences to his family, teammates, and loved ones while calling for urgent action to improve security for teams traveling across the country.

Berekum Chelsea also released a statement recounting the terrifying ordeal, emphasizing how players and officials were forced to run for their lives as gunshots rang out. The club has urged authorities to ensure justice is served and to take stronger measures to protect athletes.

This tragic event has once again highlighted ongoing concerns about safety on Ghana’s roads. Several football clubs have reportedly faced similar attacks in recent years, raising serious questions about the security arrangements for teams traveling for league matches.

The Ghana Premier League has also reacted strongly, pledging its full support to Berekum Chelsea during this difficult time. League officials called on security agencies to take immediate steps to safeguard clubs and prevent further tragedies.

Sports analysts and journalists across the country have described the mood as one of shock and frustration. Many believe that incidents like this threaten not only the safety of players but also the integrity and future of the league.

“If the lives of players cannot be protected, then it raises serious concerns about continuing the competition,” one sports journalist noted, reflecting growing fears among fans and stakeholders.

Frimpong had joined Berekum Chelsea on loan from Aduana FC earlier this year and was seen as a rising star with great potential. During his short stint with the club, he made 13 appearances and scored two goals, showing glimpses of a promising career ahead.

His parent club, Aduana FC, also paid tribute, expressing deep sorrow over his passing and offering prayers to his family and the football community.

As investigations continue, calls are growing louder for comprehensive security reforms to ensure the safety of players and officials. For many, this tragedy serves as a painful reminder of the risks faced off the pitch.

Dominic Frimpong’s death is not just a loss for his team, but for Ghanaian football as a whole — a young life and career cut short far too soon.
