Trump deletes controversial Jesus-like image after backlash online

Donald Trump has deleted a controversial social media post depicting himself as a Jesus-like figure, following widespread backlash from across the political and religious spectrum.

The AI-generated image, shared on his Truth Social platform, showed Trump dressed in a white robe with a glowing hand placed on a sick man’s forehead—imagery many critics said closely resembled traditional depictions of Jesus performing healing miracles.

The post quickly sparked outrage, including from some of Trump’s own supporters. Religious figures and conservative commentators were among those who criticised the image, arguing it crossed a line.

Christian activist Sean Feucht called for the post to be removed immediately, saying there was “no context where this is acceptable.” Similarly, conservative commentator Riley Gaines warned that “God shall not be mocked.”

The backlash also extended to faith-based media, with journalists and commentators expressing concern over the imagery. Critics argued that the portrayal blurred the line between political messaging and religious symbolism in a way many found inappropriate.

Trump later addressed the controversy, saying he believed the image showed him as a doctor rather than a religious figure. “It’s supposed to be as a doctor making people better,” he told reporters at the White House, adding that he “makes people a lot better.”

The image was removed just hours after it was posted, but not before it drew significant attention online.

The controversy came shortly after Trump publicly criticised Pope Leo XIV, calling him “weak” and “terrible for foreign policy” over his stance on the ongoing conflict involving Iran. The Pope has repeatedly condemned the war, describing it as “absurd and inhuman violence.”

Despite the criticism, Trump did not apologise for the post or his remarks about the Pope, maintaining his position on both issues.

This is not the first time Trump’s social media activity has drawn scrutiny. Previous posts, including controversial or offensive content, have also been deleted following public backlash.

The incident highlights the continued tension between political messaging, religious sensitivity, and the role of social media in shaping public discourse.
