Duches Nena, a health advocate, recently shared her powerful story of recovery on The Nana Churcher Show. After contracting COVID-19 in 2021, Nena faced severe symptoms, including pneumonia and difficulty walking. Her journey to healing, however, was marked by a significant shift in her approach to food.
“I always tell people when it comes to chronic illness, it’s a journey, it’s a continuous journey of healing,” Nena said. “I had COVID-19, and it was really bad… I feel like one of the things that saved me was the way I ate. It made me more conscious of my diet. Even though I was eating vegan, I wasn’t eating healthy vegan foods – just vegan junk food like chips and coke… I started eating more alkaline foods and reducing inflammation.”
Nena credits her recovery to an alkaline diet, inspired by the late Doctor Sebi’s approach. “I think he was one of the few people who had actually said, ‘Look, I’ve healed someone with HIV with food and an alkaline diet’,” she explained.
As someone who studied herbalism, Nena also explored African herbs and spices, such as prekese, to aid her recovery. “I started looking at our African herbs, African spices… anything anti-inflammation was great for me,” she said.
Nena’s story highlights the importance of mindful eating and exploring traditional remedies in the healing process. Her experience serves as a testament to the power of food as medicine.
