They were arrested after an incident of hooliganism that occurred in connection with the chaos witnessed during the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals match between Senegal and host country Morocco.

Some of them tried to break through onto the field while some players from Senegal walked away due to a late penalty award decision. In February, 18 fans received sentences of imprisonment of up to one year for offenses like hooliganism and damaging sport facilities. Some have served their time while others will be released next month as they were pardoned by King Mohammed VI of Morocco as a gesture of goodwill between the two countries. This is because of their longstanding relationship and the occasion happened to coincide with the festival of Eid al-Adha.

In Dakar, the released fans expressed joy and happiness for their freedom. For instance, one fan called Boubacar Diallo thought he would spend longer behind bars.

This act was highly appreciated by Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye who praised Morocco’s officials and the King.
