K. Michelle opens up about past romance with R. Kelly and says she was in love

American singer K. Michelle, born Kimberley Michelle Pate, has spoken publicly about her past relationship with R. Kelly, offering her most direct comments yet on the nature of their connection and how it developed during the early stages of her music career.

In a recent appearance on The Jason Lee Show, the singer explained that what initially began as professional mentorship eventually became more personal, with emotional attachment growing on her side.

According to K. Michelle, R. Kelly played a significant role in helping her understand the music industry when she was still trying to establish herself as an artist. She said his guidance helped her develop skills in songwriting and navigating the business side of the industry.

“I might have loved him, but he didn’t see me as anything more than motivation for writing,” she said during the interview. “I wasn’t the woman he wanted, even though I wanted him.”

She also credited him for shaping her early understanding of the industry, stating that his influence helped her learn how to operate professionally in music at a time when she was still inexperienced.

“If it wasn’t for Robert Kelly, I would not know the business,” she said. “I would not understand the skills of songwriting.”

However, she was clear in stating that her feelings were not fully reciprocated in the way she had hoped. K. Michelle emphasised that while she believed she was emotionally invested, the relationship did not develop into anything serious or committed from his side.

“I was in love with him,” she added, repeating the statement firmly during the interview.

She also addressed long-standing public speculation about her experiences with the singer, particularly allegations circulating online that she had been physically abused by him. She denied these claims, insisting that her experience did not involve physical violence.

“I saw this whole blog that was saying he beat me up so bad… no, Rob didn’t hit me,” she said. “I didn’t go through an abusive Rob.”

Instead, she described her relationship with him as emotionally complicated rather than physically abusive, stressing that her personal experience should not be confused with allegations made by others.

“My truth with Robert Sylvester Kelly… Robert Kelly always saw me as nothing,” she said, suggesting that the relationship was one-sided in terms of emotional investment.

While reflecting on her past, K. Michelle also acknowledged R. Kelly’s influence on her early career development but made clear that she condemns his later criminal behaviour. She drew a distinction between her personal experience and the wider legal cases surrounding him.

“Robert is completely wrong in the things he did,” she said, adding that others around him also bear responsibility for failing to intervene or stop his actions.

She extended her criticism to individuals within his inner circle, suggesting that enablers played a role in allowing harmful behaviour to continue. She also mentioned industry figures and associates, arguing that responsibility should not rest on one individual alone.

In 2022, R. Kelly was sentenced to 30 years in prison after being convicted on multiple charges, including sex trafficking and child sexual abuse. The case marked one of the most high-profile music industry convictions in recent decades and led to widespread debate about accountability in the entertainment world.

K. Michelle’s comments add another layer to ongoing public discussion about R. Kelly’s legacy, separating personal relationships and professional influence from his criminal convictions, while also highlighting the complex dynamics that can exist between emerging artists and powerful figures in the music industry.
