There was some disruption in Malawi’s Parliament after Lilongwe Likuni Member of Parliament (MP) Kelvin Mphande questioned the country’s choice of representative for the Miss World Pageant.
While in parliament, Mphande insisted that the reigning Miss Malawi 2025 Thandie Chisi should be chosen as the representative of Malawi instead of Ireen Navicha, Miss Malawi 2025 and daughter of Malawi’s Minister of Gender. “Thandi must go!” he chanted while banging his desk, claiming that it is an important matter in the country.
The Speaker of Parliament, Sameer Suleman, declared that the choosing of beauty pageants contestants is not in the jurisdiction of Parliament. Therefore, the MP was directed to take up the matter using the appropriate channel other than in the House.
This development comes after there was criticism in the country on the decision made by the **Miss Malawi Organisation>** to choose Navicha to represent the country instead of Chisi.
The organisers of the pageant said that according to Miss World regulations, contestants must not exceed the age of 26 years, hence why Navicha was chosen as the representative of Malawi.
The issue has received mixed reactions from social media users regarding the need for selection disputes to be debated in parliament.
