Illusion meets reality as global museum brand launches in Durban

The globally recognised Museum of Illusions is set to expand its footprint in South Africa with the opening of a new branch in Durban. The attraction will officially open its doors on April 25 at the popular Gateway Theatre of Shopping, bringing an immersive and interactive experience to the coastal city.

Originally founded in Zagreb in 2015, the Museum of Illusions has grown into a global phenomenon, with locations in major cities such as New York City, Paris and Dubai. Its arrival in Durban follows successful launches in other South African urban centres, reinforcing the country’s growing appetite for experiential entertainment that blends learning with fun.

Unlike traditional museums that focus on observation, the Museum of Illusions encourages visitors to become part of the exhibit. Guests are invited to touch, explore and interact with installations designed to challenge perception, perspective and the human brain. This hands-on approach has made it particularly popular among families, students and content creators looking for visually engaging experiences.

Among the highlights of the Durban venue is the Tilted Room, where gravity appears to shift, leaving visitors struggling to maintain balance as the room seems to defy physics. Another standout feature is the Clone Room, which allows individuals to appear multiple times within a single frame, creating surreal photographic moments. The Infinity Room, meanwhile, uses mirrors and lighting to give the illusion of endless space, offering a striking visual experience that has become a signature feature of the brand worldwide.

The concept behind the museum revolves around “edutainment” — a blend of education and entertainment. Each exhibit is designed not only to amuse but also to demonstrate scientific principles related to optics, perception and human cognition. This makes the attraction appealing to schools and educational groups, as well as casual visitors.

Owner Mark Collie highlighted Durban’s vibrant and diverse culture as a key reason for choosing the city as the next location. According to him, the strong response in Johannesburg and Cape Town indicated a clear demand for interactive attractions that go beyond conventional leisure activities.

The Durban branch is also expected to contribute to the local economy by attracting both domestic and international tourists. Situated within one of the city’s busiest shopping and entertainment hubs, the museum is well-positioned to draw steady foot traffic and become a must-visit destination.

In addition to individual visits, the venue will cater to group bookings, including school excursions, corporate events and social gatherings. Its flexible layout allows for customised experiences, making it suitable for a wide range of occasions.

Operating hours have been designed to accommodate different schedules, with extended evening hours on weekends. While tickets will be available at the door, visitors are encouraged to book online in advance to secure their preferred time slots, particularly during peak periods.

The launch of the Museum of Illusions in Durban reflects a broader trend in the entertainment industry, where audiences are increasingly seeking immersive and shareable experiences. With social media playing a significant role in how people engage with attractions, visually striking environments like those offered by the museum have gained widespread popularity.

As Durban continues to position itself as a leading tourism destination, the addition of the Museum of Illusions is expected to enhance its appeal, offering something new and distinctive for residents and visitors alike. By combining science, art and interactive design, the attraction promises an experience that is both entertaining and thought-provoking.
