Niamh O’Brien, a former lead performer in Lord of the Dance, has died following an illness, according to the BBC. She was married to Irish-American dancer and choreographer Michael Flatley for 20 years.

Flatley announces her death

Flatley announced O’Brien’s death in a social media post, describing her as his wife, best friend and a loving mother.

“My heart is broken. I have lost my beautiful wife, Niamh, and my best friend,” Flatley said. He added that his wife had been the “most loving mother, wife and person” and said their lives would never be the same without her.

Family asks for prayers

Flatley thanked those who had offered love and support to his family following O’Brien’s death.

He also asked the public to keep O’Brien, their son Michael St James and the wider family in their thoughts and prayers during the difficult period.
