Nadia Nakai Sounds Alarm on SA Hip Hop: ‘It’s Super Toxic Right Now’
South African rapper Nadia Nakai has raised concerns about the current state of local hip hop, describing the scene as “super toxic” amid ongoing industry tensions and online commentary.
Speaking on the “Because We Said So” podcast with hosts Landzy Gama and Sama Marubelela, Nakai revealed that she is stepping back from the music scene to distance herself from what she sees as growing negativity.
According to Nakai, the issue goes beyond artist rivalries and diss tracks, extending into podcast culture and online discussions that shape public perception of the genre.
“I’m taking a step back because I feel like it’s super toxic right now,” she said, pointing to both artist conflicts and the broader conversations happening online.
She criticised the rise of podcast commentary driven by viral moments rather than meaningful dialogue, suggesting that many voices dominating the space lack depth and accountability.
While acknowledging that some platforms offer thoughtful discussions, Nakai expressed concern about what she described as “random people” gaining influence simply through access to microphones and streaming platforms.
Her comments highlight a wider debate about the impact of digital media on music culture, where click-driven content can often overshadow informed perspectives.
Despite stepping back from the chaos within the industry, Nakai is continuing to expand her business ventures. She is focusing on her fashion brand Nak’d Authority, which targets a modern, style-conscious audience.
The rapper is also building on her beauty brand “Naked Without,” launched in 2023, and has shared insights into the challenges and rewards of entrepreneurship.
Nakai described running a business as both one of the most difficult and most fulfilling experiences of her career, signalling a shift in focus as she balances music with her growing business empire.
