Nigeria’s military has rescued 360 people who were abducted by Boko Haram militants in the southern part of Borno State. The operation was carried out in the Mandara Mountains, an area widely known as one of the insurgent group’s strongholds. Military officials described the rescue mission as a major breakthrough in the fight against terrorism in northern Nigeria.

According to army spokesperson Haruna Sani, the victims had endured severe hardship during their captivity. Sadly, two infants died from exhaustion due to the difficult mountain terrain and the harsh conditions they faced while being held hostage for a long period.

The Nigerian army confirmed that the remaining rescued victims were safely evacuated from the area. They are currently receiving medical treatment and humanitarian assistance as authorities work to support their recovery after the traumatic experience.

Nigeria continues to battle a serious security crisis in its northern regions. The country has faced more than a decade of insurgency led by Boko Haram and other armed groups involved in kidnappings, attacks, and ransom demands. Thousands of people have been killed, while millions have been displaced from their homes.

One of the major threats in the region remains Boko Haram and its breakaway faction, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), which is linked to the Islamic State group. Nigerian authorities recently announced that joint military operations with the United States eliminated 175 ISWAP fighters in May.

Despite ongoing military operations, security analysts believe the government still faces major challenges in protecting citizens from insurgent attacks. President Bola Tinubu has repeatedly promised to tackle insecurity, but many communities in northern Nigeria continue to live under constant fear of violence and abduction.
