New Zealand tightened their grip on the third Test against England after extending their lead beyond 350 runs on day four at Trent Bridge, putting the hosts under increasing pressure in the series decider.

The day’s play was dominated by the news of England captain Ben Stokes’ shock retirement announcement, but the veteran all-rounder made an immediate impact by claiming a wicket with the very first delivery of his spell.

Mitchell Santner was dismissed for a duck after England successfully reviewed an appeal for a catch behind off Stokes. The breakthrough gave England a promising start, but New Zealand responded with a determined batting display to strengthen their position.

Fast bowler Jofra Archer added another important wicket by removing Nathan Smith, who edged behind to the wicketkeeper. Despite the setbacks, Daryl Mitchell stood firm and frustrated England’s bowlers with a disciplined innings.

Mitchell survived an early scare after successfully overturning an lbw decision when he was on 28. He continued to anchor the innings and reached a patient half-century from 170 deliveries, helping New Zealand push their advantage further.

Tom Blundell also made a useful contribution before attempting a hook shot against Archer. The wicketkeeper-batter top-edged the ball and was comfortably caught by Ben Duckett, departing for 18.

Earlier, Rachin Ravindra narrowly missed out on a century after producing another composed innings. The left-hander scored 94 before he was trapped lbw by spinner Shoaib Bashir, giving England a much-needed breakthrough.

Despite England picking up wickets at regular intervals, New Zealand continued to add valuable runs and stretched their lead past the 350-run mark, leaving the home side facing a daunting chase if they are to win the match and the series.

With the contest finely balanced at 1-1 heading into the final Test, England will need an exceptional batting performance if they are to overhaul New Zealand’s imposing target and avoid defeat.

The match remains delicately poised, but New Zealand hold the upper hand as they edge closer to victory at Trent Bridge.
