The victories give Democrats control of the House of Representatives and the Senate for the next two years, significantly limiting Trump’s ability to advance his legislative agenda.

The results mark a dramatic shift in Washington, with Democrats making gains in several traditionally Republican states, including Texas, Kansas and South Carolina.

Trump has acknowledged that the war with Iran contributed to the Republican Party’s losses. Voters also expressed concerns about the rising cost of living and the administration’s handling of the economy.

The new Democratic majority is expected to use its congressional power to scrutinise the Trump administration, challenge its policies and block some presidential nominations.

Trump, however, has indicated that he will use his presidential veto power to oppose legislation he considers unacceptable.

The election results represent a significant change in the balance of political power in the United States as Trump enters the final two years of his presidency.
