Pope Leo XIV Diagnosed With Lung Cancer
Pope Leo XIV has been diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma after undergoing successful surgery to remove the lower lobe of his right lung, the Vatican has announced.
Surgery Completed Without Complications
The 71-year-old pontiff underwent a 90-minute operation at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on Tuesday. The Vatican said the procedure was successful, with no complications, and that the Pope woke up normally before returning to his hospital room.
Cancer Detected During Routine Checks
The lung growth was discovered during what the Vatican described as routine medical checks. Although the nodule was initially believed to be at an early stage, further tests are being conducted to determine whether the cancer has spread. The Vatican confirmed that examinations identified the growth as pulmonary adenocarcinoma, a type of lung cancer. The Pope is expected to remain in hospital for approximately one week.
Pope Had Announced Planned Operation
Pope Leo disclosed his upcoming operation on Sunday after delivering the traditional Angelus blessing from the balcony overlooking St Peter’s Square. He said doctors had found a growth that appeared contained and recommended its removal. His schedule has been cleared until October 20 to allow time for recovery.
Catholics Express Concern and Support
News of the diagnosis has worried Catholics around the world. Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin described the announcement as unexpected but said cardinals had been encouraged by the Pope’s calm demeanour and remained hopeful about his recovery. Supporters also gathered outside Gemelli Hospital, offering prayers and greetings as the Pope arrived. Some expressed shock at the diagnosis, while others said his apparent calm helped reassure them.
Upcoming Latin America Visit in Focus
The Pope is expected to travel to Latin America in early November, including a visit to Peru, where he previously served as a missionary and bishop. According to Cardinal Tarcisio Isao Kikuchi of Tokyo, the pontiff wanted to undergo surgery promptly because of the planned trip. Whether he will be able to proceed with the visit may depend on his recovery and the results of further medical assessments.
