Harry Calls for Reconciliation

In an interview with GQ magazine, recorded in New York in September and published on Tuesday, the Duke of Sussex said he wanted to repair strained relationships and leave old disputes behind.

“The most important thing is to reconcile,” Harry said, acknowledging that some people might not want the relationships to improve, but stressing that he did.

He said family disagreements were relatable experiences, pointing to strained relationships between siblings and between parents and children. He also encouraged people to let go of past grievances, while recognising that emotional scars can remain.

Relationship With King Charles and Prince William

Harry admitted that he grieved the breakdown of his relationships with his father, King Charles III, and older brother, Prince William.

The royal family’s divisions deepened after Harry and his wife, Meghan, stepped back from royal duties in 2020 and moved to California. The couple subsequently spoke publicly about their experiences within the monarchy.

Harry said circumstances had changed since then and expressed hope that relationships could improve. A spokesperson for the prince clarified that his comments about some people not wanting reconciliation were not intended as criticism of William or any other family member.

Hopes for Better Relations With the Press

The Duke also expressed hope that tensions with sections of the British media could ease. His disputes with newspaper groups have led to several legal battles over press intrusion and the treatment of his family.

Harry acknowledged that some confrontations had been necessary but said he hoped everyone involved could move forward and focus on the greater good.

He described himself as optimistic but not naive, adding that mutual respect would be important in rebuilding relationships.

Returning to Britain With His Family

Harry and Meghan returned to Britain with their two children in August after spending six years in the United States.

Harry said he had not fully realised how important it was to him for Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet to attend school in Britain. He said the children were enjoying their new experience and would have opportunities to experience aspects of his own childhood.

He also discussed the impact of losing his mother, Princess Diana, when he was 12, reflecting on how her absence had shaped his life and family relationships.

Harry Remains Hopeful

Despite acknowledging the lasting effects of past disagreements, Harry said he wanted to move forward rather than continue living with family tensions.

His comments suggest a willingness to pursue reconciliation, although they do not establish whether his father or brother shares the same intentions.
