Emergency teams are searching for survivors after a four-storey building collapsed in the Jardim Vitória neighbourhood of Belo Horizonte, in Brazil’s Minas Gerais state.

The structure, which housed a nursing home along with small residences and a beauty clinic, collapsed in the early hours of the morning while about 29 people were believed to be inside.

Rescue workers have already pulled several survivors from the rubble. Eight people were taken to hospital, including a two-year-old child who was rescued conscious and reported to be in stable condition.

More than 40 firefighters, supported by rescue dogs and specialised equipment, are continuing to search the debris for people who may still be trapped. Some occupants also managed to escape before emergency teams arrived, thanks to help from nearby residents.

Authorities say the building reportedly had the necessary permits, but the cause of the collapse remains unknown. A full investigation is expected once rescue operations are completed.
