Ukrainian Drone Strikes Kill Eight at Russian Warehouses Amid Escalating Attacks

Eight people have been killed and 62 others injured after Ukrainian drones struck two warehouses belonging to Russia’s largest online retailer, Wildberries, according to Russian officials.

The attacks targeted facilities in Tambov and Elektrostal, causing significant damage and casualties as the Russia-Ukraine conflict continues to intensify.

Officials said seven people were killed and 25 injured at a Wildberries warehouse in Tambov, located about 475 kilometres southeast of Moscow. Another strike on a warehouse in Elektrostal, in the Moscow region, killed one person and injured 37 others.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Ukraine carried out the strikes, saying the targets were major logistics facilities allegedly linked to Russia’s military supply chain.

According to Zelensky, the facilities were being used to supply restricted components for drone production and navigation equipment. He said the attacks were part of Ukraine’s response to continued Russian strikes against Ukrainian cities and civilian infrastructure.

The Ukrainian leader also said his forces carried out additional operations targeting locations in the Sea of Azov, the Black Sea and Russian-controlled Crimea.

Videos and images circulating online, which have not been independently verified, showed large flames and thick black smoke rising from one of the warehouse buildings. Workers were seen leaving the area as emergency crews responded to the incident.

The strikes came after Russian attacks across Ukraine killed 14 people overnight into Wednesday, according to Ukrainian officials.

Wildberries, often described as Russia’s version of Amazon, confirmed that the attacks caused deaths among employees working night shifts. Chief Executive Tatyana Kim described the incident as a “terrible night” for the company and Russia.

Tambov Governor Evgeniy Pervyshov said the region experienced one of its largest drone attacks, with 28 drones reportedly intercepted before reaching their targets. He said several of those injured suffered shrapnel wounds, with some in serious condition.

In the Moscow region, Governor Andrei Vorobyov said Russian air defences intercepted dozens of drones overnight. He added that eight injured people at the Elektrostal warehouse were in serious condition.

Vorobyov also reported that a Russian oil depot was damaged after being hit by falling drone debris. Zelensky separately confirmed that Ukraine had struck an oil-related facility.

Ukraine has increasingly targeted Russia’s energy infrastructure with long-range drone attacks, arguing that oil and gas facilities help finance Moscow’s military operations.

Kyiv recently claimed that a significant portion of Russia’s oil refining capacity had been affected by these attacks, although the figure has not been independently verified.

Russian President Vladimir Putin previously acknowledged that Ukrainian strikes had contributed to fuel shortages inside Russia. Moscow has since introduced measures aimed at increasing domestic fuel supplies.

As both sides continue exchanging long-range attacks, the conflict shows no sign of slowing, with critical infrastructure remaining a major target in the ongoing war.
