Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues its strong run at the North American box office, earning an estimated $70 million during its third weekend in cinemas.
The Marvel blockbuster, starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, has now generated more than $2 billion globally since its July 31 release, according to industry tracker Exhibitor Relations.
Sony’s biggest hit
The film has become Sony Pictures’ highest-grossing movie, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
It also broke the record for the biggest domestic opening weekend ever on an unadjusted-for-inflation basis, earning $360 million and surpassing Avengers: Endgame.
Peter Parker faces new challenges
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film follows Peter Parker as he deals with changes to his powers while living in isolation after erasing his identity.
He attempts to reconnect with his former girlfriend MJ and best friend Ned while confronting a new threat to New York City.
‘The Odyssey’ takes second place
Christopher Nolan’s epic The Odyssey followed in second place, earning $23.2 million domestically during its fifth weekend.
Warner Bros.’ sci-fi thriller The End of Oak Street, starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, opened in third with $21 million.
Other films in the top 10
Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie debuted in fourth place with $20.5 million, while Katseye: Wild Hearts opened in fifth with $3.6 million.
The remaining top 10 included SIX The Musical Live! with $3 million, The Brink of War with $2.7 million, Toy Story 5 with $2.3 million, One Night Only with $2 million and Your Name. 10th Anniversary with $1.6 million.
