There have been intense rains in the capital city of Tunisia, Tunis, causing fears of floods and disruptions.
Thunderstorms lashed the capital city, Tunis, and its surroundings on Thursday following a period of intense heat. The rain was accompanied by hail in some places, leading to disruption of traffic with accumulation of water on the roads and pavements.
In the old city of Tunis, water flowed down the narrow streets as people took refuge in shops and under canopies. Schools and universities in the capital city had classes suspended due to intense weather conditions.
The rain comes after the country had witnessed heatwaves during the summer. These rains have increased worries over the consequences of extreme weather on the communities and infrastructure in the North African country.
Earlier in January, there had been flooding in the country leading to deaths of at least five people. The country had seen its highest rainfall in over 70 years.
The recent rains come against the backdrop of disruptions caused by weather conditions in the country.
