US President Donald Trump has announced plans to remove all US tariffs on Irish whiskey, ending a 15% duty currently applied to whiskey produced in the Republic of Ireland.

Trump made the announcement at his golf resort in Doonbeg, County Clare, while presenting the Irish Open trophy to winner Shane Lowry. He said he had discussed the issue with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin and Lowry, describing the existing tariffs as unfair.

The move could end a competitive advantage enjoyed by some Northern Irish whiskey producers, whose UK-made products already benefit from tariff exemptions.

Trump also renewed his support for Irish reunification during his two-day visit, saying he believes bringing Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland together would be a natural development.

His visit attracted both support and opposition, with more than 10,000 people protesting in Dublin.
