US President Donald Trump says Washington is still “not satisfied” with the terms of a possible agreement with Iran, despite ongoing negotiations aimed at ending months of conflict across the Middle East.
Speaking during a cabinet meeting, Trump said Iran appeared eager to secure a deal but warned that the United States remained prepared to resume military action if talks failed.
“They want very much to make a deal,” Trump said. “So far, they haven’t gotten there and we’re not satisfied with it.”
His comments came after Iranian state television published what it claimed were details of a draft agreement between Tehran and Washington. The reported terms included reopening the Strait of Hormuz, restoring commercial shipping routes and withdrawing US military forces from the region.
The White House quickly dismissed the reported document as “a complete fabrication”.
Negotiations between the US and Iran appeared to gain momentum late last week, with officials from both countries hinting that progress had been made. However, both sides later cautioned that a final agreement was still uncertain.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said there had been “some progress and some interest” in the talks, but declined to provide details on the remaining disagreements.
The current conflict began after the US and Israel launched strikes on Iran in February, prompting Tehran to retaliate against Israeli and Gulf targets and effectively shut down the Strait of Hormuz — a vital global oil shipping route. The disruption caused sharp increases in global oil prices and heightened fears of a wider regional war.
Although a ceasefire agreed in April has largely held, tensions remain high. Earlier this week, the US launched additional strikes against Iranian missile sites and naval targets, saying the operations were conducted in self-defence to protect American forces in the region.
Iran condemned the strikes as a violation of the ceasefire and maintained that talks remain ongoing, though officials stressed that a final agreement is “not imminent”.
