US President Donald Trump is safe after gunshots were fired during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, triggering panic and a swift security response.
The incident occurred at around 20:35 ET, as guests attended the high-profile event in Washington, D.C.. According to officials, Trump was quickly rushed to safety and later returned to the White House.
The United States Secret Service confirmed that a suspect was taken into custody at the scene. US media have identified him as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, from Torrance.
Authorities said one Secret Service officer was shot at close range but survived thanks to a bullet-proof vest.
Law enforcement agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, have since searched an address linked to the suspect in California as part of the ongoing investigation.
Initial reports suggest the suspect may have been targeting Trump officials, though police have said the motive is still under investigation.
Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes inside the venue, with attendees taking cover under tables as the situation unfolded.
The suspect is expected to be formally charged in court on Monday.
