The United Nations has appointed Garry Conille as its new Resident Coordinator in Kenya, marking a significant step in strengthening the organisation’s leadership in the region. His experience also includes serving as UN Resident Coordinator in both Burundi and Jamaica between 2017 and 2022. Beyond his UN career, Conille has played a key role in the political landscape of Haiti. He first served as the country’s prime minister from 2011 to 2012, during a period of reconstruction and recovery following years of instability. More recently, he returned to the position in 2024 under Haiti’s Transitional Presidential Council, which was established to restore governance and stability amid deepening political and security crises.
During his second term as prime minister, Haiti faced escalating violence driven by powerful armed gangs, prompting international concern. One of the most notable developments during that period was the deployment of Kenyan-led security forces to Haiti, under a UN-backed mission aimed at helping restore order. Conille was later succeeded by Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, who continues to serve as Haiti’s acting prime minister with full executive authority. In his new role in Kenya, Conille will serve as the UN’s top representative in the country, responsible for coordinating the activities of various UN agencies and ensuring alignment with national development priorities.
