Direct talks between the United States and Iran are set to begin in Switzerland as tensions remain high over the Strait of Hormuz and the ongoing conflict in Lebanon.
US Vice-President JD Vance arrived in Switzerland ahead of the negotiations, while an Iranian delegation led by parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also arrived for the talks.
Pakistan is expected to play a mediation role, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir participating in discussions aimed at preserving the peace agreement.
The negotiations come after Iran announced that it had once again closed the Strait of Hormuz, accusing the United States of failing to uphold parts of the recent agreement intended to end the conflict. However, US Central Command said maritime traffic continues to move through the strategic waterway.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most important energy routes, carrying millions of barrels of oil and petroleum products every day.
The talks are expected to focus on Iran’s nuclear programme, regional security concerns and efforts to maintain the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Meanwhile, violence continues in Lebanon despite ceasefire efforts. Lebanese officials reported dozens of deaths following Israeli airstrikes, while Israel said it targeted Hezbollah positions and militants.
Both Washington and Tehran have expressed concerns that continued fighting in Lebanon could undermine broader diplomatic efforts to stabilise the region and secure a lasting peace agreement.
