US Launches New Strikes on Iran After Escalating Tensions in the Gulf
The United States has launched fresh military strikes on Iran, intensifying tensions in the Middle East after President Donald Trump warned earlier that Washington would “hit them hard” if attacks against American interests continued.
Iranian state and local media reported explosions along the country’s southern coast late on Wednesday, with additional reports indicating that strikes targeted Iranian-controlled islands in the Gulf region.
The latest military action comes amid rapidly escalating hostilities between the United States and Iran, raising fears of a wider regional conflict.
US Says Strikes Were Response to Shipping Attacks
The US Central Command (Centcom) confirmed that American forces carried out the strikes in response to what it described as “recent unjustified aggression against commercial shipping and civilian crews” in the Strait of Hormuz.
The strategic waterway is one of the world’s most important shipping routes, with a significant portion of global oil supplies passing through it each day.
According to Centcom, the latest operation follows US military strikes conducted on Tuesday, which were launched after attacks on three commercial vessels transiting the strait.
Washington has accused Iran of threatening maritime security and endangering international shipping in the region.
Iran Reports Explosions Along Southern Coast
Iranian media reported hearing multiple explosions in areas along the country’s southern coastline. Several reports also suggested that strikes hit islands under Iranian control in the Gulf, although the full extent of the damage has not yet been confirmed.
Iranian authorities have not immediately provided details on casualties or the impact of the attacks.
The situation remains fluid, with military and government officials closely monitoring developments as tensions continue to rise.
Iran Previously Launched Retaliatory Attacks
The latest US strikes come just hours after Iran claimed responsibility for retaliatory attacks against American military sites in Bahrain and Kuwait during the early hours of Wednesday.
Iran said those operations were carried out in response to earlier US military action and warned that it would continue defending its interests against what it described as aggression.
The exchange of strikes between the two countries marks one of the most serious escalations in relations in recent years.
Tehran Vows to Respond
Before the latest strikes were confirmed, President Trump had issued a stern warning to Tehran, saying the United States would respond forcefully to any further threats.
Iran’s Foreign Minister responded to Trump’s remarks by declaring that Tehran would not be intimidated.
“We do not answer vulgarity with vulgarity, but with action: fearlessly and with great valour,” the minister said.
The statement has fuelled concerns that Iran could launch further retaliatory measures, potentially increasing instability across the Gulf region.
Fears of Wider Regional Conflict Grow
The renewed confrontation has sparked international concern over the possibility of a broader military conflict in the Middle East.
Analysts warn that continued exchanges between the United States and Iran could threaten global energy markets, disrupt international shipping routes and draw other regional powers into the crisis.
As both nations exchange warnings and military action, the international community is closely watching for signs of either de-escalation or further escalation in one of the world’s most strategically important regions.
