The United States has eased sanctions on several senior officials in Mali, according to a notice from the US Treasury Department.
Those affected include Defense Minister Sadio Camara, along with military officials Alou Boi Diarra and Adama Bagayoko. The officials had previously been sanctioned over alleged links to the Russian mercenary group Wagner Group and its operations in Mali.
Wagner had a strong presence in several African countries, including Mali and Libya, providing military advisers and security assistance. Following the 2023 death of Wagner founder Yevgeny Prigozhin, Russia moved to reorganize its security footprint in Africa under a structure known as the Africa Corps.
The US Treasury did not provide specific reasons for lifting the sanctions. The move comes as Washington reassesses its broader Africa policy and diplomatic strategy on the continent.
