Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff’s Early Years to Become TV Drama
Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff’s rise from young Philadelphia performers to influential hip-hop stars will be explored in a new scripted television series titled 215.
New series revisits their beginnings
The drama is being developed by Smith’s Westbrook Studios and will examine the early journey of the longtime musical collaborators, who also appeared together in the 1990s sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
According to Deadline, the series will follow a witty teenage rapper, his DJ partner and their friends as they pursue a record deal and work towards musical success.
Philadelphia hip-hop scene takes centre stage
Set against Philadelphia’s late-1980s and early-1990s hip-hop culture, 215 will explore the experiences that shaped the duo’s partnership and helped establish their place in music history.
DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince achieved major success with songs including Parents Just Don’t Understand, released in 1989, and Summertime, released in 1991.
Westbrook Studios outlines vision
Terence Carter, president of television at Westbrook Studios, said the project reflects the company’s commitment to character-focused storytelling and distinctive settings.
He explained that the series would celebrate the duo’s emergence alongside Philadelphia’s influential hip-hop scene during a defining period for the city’s music culture.
Carter also said the partnership with The Malar Group would support a wider collection of film and television projects, beginning with a story centred on friendship, ambition and the environment that shaped the performers.
Project described as an untold story
Sayan Navaratnam, founder of The Malar Group, described 215 as the untold origin story behind a cultural phenomenon that has remained popular with audiences worldwide.
He said the collaboration with Westbrook Studios would focus on distinctive creative ideas and compelling storytelling, adding that the new series stood out for its portrayal of two people whose mutual belief helped them overcome challenges and build a lasting legacy.
Navaratnam said the project would mark the beginning of a broader partnership between the two companies.
