30 children among those killed in Lake Kariba tragedy
The death toll from a ferry disaster in Zimbabwe has risen to 94, with police confirming the recovery of two more bodies.
The passenger ferry capsized on August 11 in rough waters on Lake Kariba, a vital transport route for rural communities.
Children among victims
Police said 30 of those killed were children under the age of 10, including a one-month-old infant.
Authorities said 77 people were rescued after the ferry overturned.
Investigation launched
Local Government Minister Daniel Garwe blamed the disaster on “negligence and human error by the captain” and announced an investigation.
The government said weather authorities had warned against sailing on the day of the accident.
Ferry capacity questioned
Authorities said the ferry had a capacity of 90 passengers, while 94 bodies have now been recovered.
Lake Kariba borders Zimbabwe and Zambia and is the world’s largest man-made lake by volume.
