An accountant aged 28, has been sentenced to four years in jail after he was convicted of stealing 1.4 million shillings from a media college and spending the bulk on gambling.
Felix Kiplimo Chemwena was found guilty of misappropriation during his service as an accountant at Prudent College of Media between January 2023 and November 25, 2024.
In his ruling, Senior Resident Magistrate Keyne Gweno said that M-Pesa records and messages presented in court showed that the accountant diverted the funds towards gambling activities. Mr Gweno said that the accused was very articulate and eloquent and that he made a brilliant defense.
“I noted that Mr Chemwena is a very bright and brilliant young person of 28 years. His only problem is gambling,” Magistrate Gweno noted while sentencing. “While noting that the accused is of brilliant intellect, and capable of carrying out himself with vigor and defense, the custodial sentence is necessary and in the interests of the complainant and the court, “he added.
The story of the accountant has again brought up issues of gambling addiction and financial crimes among young professionals in Kenya.
