Indirect negotiations between Iran and the United States over Tehran’s nuclear program concluded in Geneva on Thursday without reaching an agreement, raising concerns about escalating tensions in the Middle East. Additional talks are scheduled next week in Vienna.
Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi, who mediated the discussions, said there had been “significant progress” but offered no details. Iranian state media reported that Tehran intends to continue uranium enrichment, reject proposals to transfer it abroad, and push for the lifting of international sanctions.
U.S. President Donald Trump seeks a deal to curb Iran’s nuclear activities, citing domestic unrest and the risk of regional conflict. Iran, meanwhile, maintains it will not discuss issues like missile development or support for armed groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah.
Technical-level talks will resume in Vienna, home to the International Atomic Energy Agency, which is expected to play a critical role in any future agreement.
