Senegal

Senegal publicly displayed the Africa Cup of Nations trophy before a friendly match against Peru in Paris, despite being stripped of the 2025 title earlier in the month.

The controversy began after the Afcon final against Morocco, where Senegal players walked off the pitch in protest following a late penalty decision awarded to the hosts. After a delay, the match resumed, Morocco missed the penalty, and Senegal went on to score an extra-time winner.

However, the Confederation of African Football later overturned the result after an appeal by Morocco’s football federation, ruling that Senegal had forfeited the match and awarding Morocco a 3-0 victory.

Senegal have since taken the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which is expected to deliver a final ruling soon.

Before kickoff at Stade de France, captain Kalidou Koulibaly and goalkeeper Edouard Mendy led a lap of honour with the trophy, placing it in the presidential box. The team also wore kits featuring two stars, symbolising both their 2021 title and the disputed 2025 victory.

On the pitch, Senegal secured a 2-0 win over Peru, with goals from Nicolas Jackson and Ismaila Sarr.

The match marked Senegal’s first outing since the controversial final and serves as preparation for the upcoming World Cup, where they will face tough competition in the group stage.
