Slaheddine Selmi has been elected as the new head of Tunisian General Labour Union, one of the most powerful labour organisations in Tunisia.
At 67, Selmi is viewed as a figure of continuity, with deep knowledge of the union’s internal structure and broad acceptance across its factions. In his first public remarks, he emphasized the need to restore social dialogue with the government after months of strained relations.
Originally from Kairouan, Selmi has long been active in the education sector and previously served on the UGTT’s executive bureau. He has pledged to prioritise transparency and maintain the union’s independence from political influence.
His leadership begins at a challenging time, with internal divisions forcing the union to hold its congress earlier than expected. Relations between the union and the government also remain tense.
Outgoing leader Noureddine Tabboubi has led the organisation since 2017. The UGTT, alongside three other civil society groups, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for its role in supporting Tunisia’s democratic transition.
Selmi’s next steps will be closely watched, as questions remain over how the union will position itself politically in the coming period.
