Militants Launch Coordinated Attacks Across Mali, Targeting Army Bases in Bamako

Mali’s military government has confirmed that armed militants launched a series of coordinated attacks across multiple locations in the country, including the capital, Bamako.

According to the army, fighters described as “terrorists” targeted key military installations early Saturday, sparking intense clashes. Explosions and sustained gunfire were reported in several areas, including near the main military base in Kati, just outside the capital.

Kati holds strategic importance as it is closely linked to the country’s leadership and is home to military ruler Assimi Goïta.

Authorities said fighting was ongoing and urged residents to remain calm as security forces responded to the attacks. No group has yet claimed responsibility.

Mali has faced a prolonged security crisis, battling insurgencies linked to extremist organisations affiliated with al-Qaeda and the Islamic State for more than a decade. The country has also struggled with a longstanding Tuareg rebellion in its northern regions.

The attacks highlight ongoing instability despite repeated promises by the military government to restore order after seizing power in coups in 2020 and 2021.

In recent years, Mali has shifted its alliances, cutting ties with Western partners and strengthening cooperation with Russia. The presence of Russian-linked forces, including the restructured Africa Corps, has been part of efforts to combat jihadist groups.

However, militants continue to carry out frequent attacks on both military targets and civilians, particularly in the north and central regions.

Recent months have also seen disruptions to daily life in Bamako, including fuel shortages linked to attacks on supply routes by extremist groups such as JNIM.

The latest wave of violence underscores the ongoing challenges facing Mali’s leadership as it attempts to stabilise the country while maintaining control under military rule.
