Veteran Nollywood actor Anayo Modestus Onyekwere, widely known as Kanayo O. Kanayo, has called for stricter safety measures for the use of firearms on movie sets following a fatal shooting in Delta State.
His appeal comes after the death of upcoming singer Oghenemine Million Ogidi, who was allegedly shot by police officer Usman Nuhu at a terminal in Delta State. The incident, which was captured on video and widely circulated online, has sparked outrage and condemnation.
In a video shared on Instagram, Kanayo—currently filming in Delta—raised concerns about the safety risks actors face when handling both real and imitation firearms during productions. He urged filmmakers and actors to strictly comply with legal requirements, including obtaining police permits and proper licensing for all weapons used on set.
According to him, carrying valid documentation at all times is critical to avoiding dangerous misunderstandings, particularly during encounters with law enforcement officers.
He further described the killing as a grave injustice and called on the Inspector General of Police to ensure that the officer involved faces full legal consequences. Kanayo stressed that accountability is essential to deter future incidents.
Meanwhile, the Delta State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of the officer, as human rights groups continue to demand a thorough and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
