Ghana wins three medals and reaches 4x100m relay final

Ghana produced a strong resurgence at the 24th African Athletics Championships in Accra, securing three medals and booking a place in the men’s 4x100m relay final after a slow start to the competition.

Competing at the University of Ghana Stadium, Team Ghana ended two days without a podium finish as Florence Agyemang, Alex Amankwaa, and Esther Ohenewaa delivered breakthrough performances to lift the host nation.

Agyemang opened the medal tally with bronze in the women’s 400m, clocking 51.87 seconds in a race won by Ethiopia’s Ahmed Ajayba. Botswana’s Obakeng Kamberuka took silver.

Amankwaa followed with another bronze in the men’s 800m, finishing in 1:46.18 behind Kenya’s Kimtai Kkelvin Loti and Morocco’s Imade Bouchejda.

In the women’s high jump, Ohenewaa claimed silver after clearing a personal best 1.81m, finishing behind South Africa’s Christi Snyman, while Ethiopia’s Betselot Alemayehu took bronze.

The standout moment for the host nation came in the men’s 4x100m relay heats, where Ghana’s quartet delivered a dominant performance, winning Heat Two in 38.69 seconds ahead of Botswana and Kenya.

Anchored by Ghana’s fastest sprinter Abdul Rasheed Saminu, the team signalled strong intent ahead of the final, where they will face tough competition from Nigeria, Mauritius, and Zimbabwe.

Saminu stressed the job is not yet complete, while teammate Ibrahim Fuseni confidently predicted victory in the final.

Ghana also narrowly missed another medal in the men’s 400m hurdles, where Mammoudou Baba Seidu finished fifth in a race led by Botswana’s Kemorera Tisang and Victor Ntweng.
