Emergency response teams are continuing operations after a fatal train collision in Bedford, Bedfordshire, that left one train driver dead and 89 people injured.

The crash involved the 16:40 service from Corby and the 15:50 service from Nottingham, both of which were heading to London St Pancras when they collided on Friday.

Emergency services remain at the scene assessing the damage as authorities begin a full investigation into how the incident occurred. The UK transport secretary has confirmed that a “thorough investigation” will be carried out to determine the cause of the crash.

According to the train drivers’ union ASLEF, the driver who died was operating the Corby service at the time of the collision.

Passengers described the moment of impact as severe, with reports of a loud “boom” followed by panic and injuries inside the carriages.

The King has also expressed his condolences, saying he is “greatly saddened” by the tragedy and sending thoughts to the family of the deceased driver and all those affected.

Emergency responders are continuing rescue and recovery efforts as investigators work to establish what led to the collision.
