Tanzania Deploys Security Forces Ahead of Planned Nationwide Protests

Tanzania has deployed security forces, including military personnel and police officers, across Dar es Salaam and several other major cities ahead of planned nationwide protests scheduled for 7 July.

The increased security presence follows the government’s recent decision to ban all political rallies, citing concerns over national security. Officials have not indicated how long the restriction will remain in effect.

The planned demonstrations are being organised primarily by youth groups calling for democratic reforms, greater political freedoms, and justice for victims who lost their lives during violence linked to last year’s disputed general election.

The protests stem from widespread dissatisfaction over the 2025 election, which saw several prominent opposition candidates barred from contesting. President Samia Suluhu Hassan was declared the winner with nearly 98% of the vote, a result that opposition parties and critics have continued to challenge.

Following the election, violent unrest erupted in different parts of the country. A government-appointed commission later reported that at least 518 people were killed during the disturbances. However, opposition leaders, religious organisations, and human rights groups have disputed the official figure, claiming the actual death toll was significantly higher.

President Hassan’s administration has maintained that the unrest was an attempt to destabilise and overthrow the government. Authorities have consistently rejected allegations from human rights organisations accusing security forces of using excessive force against protesters during the post-election violence.

As the protest date approaches, reports indicate that security patrols have intensified in Dar es Salaam and other urban centres, with military vehicles and police officers visible in strategic locations. The deployment is intended to maintain public order and prevent any potential violence during the demonstrations.

Organisers have said the protests will remain peaceful and are focused on demanding accountability, electoral reforms, and improved democratic governance. Many young Tanzanians have used social media to mobilise support, calling on citizens to participate in peaceful demonstrations.

The planned protests also coincide with the government’s annual Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair, one of the country’s largest business and commercial events. Authorities are expected to implement heightened security measures throughout the exhibition period to ensure normal business activities continue without disruption.

Political tensions remain high in Tanzania as both the government and opposition groups prepare for what could become one of the country’s most closely watched demonstrations in recent years. Regional and international observers are expected to monitor developments closely, particularly regarding the response of security forces and the conduct of protesters.

The government has urged citizens to obey the law and avoid actions that could threaten public safety, while protest organisers continue to insist that their demonstrations are aimed at promoting democracy, justice, and constitutional rights.
