Prince William Sends Support After England’s World Cup Semi-Final Defeat to Argentina
Royal family and UK leaders praise England team despite painful loss in tournament
The Prince of Wales has expressed his disappointment following England’s 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the World Cup semi-final, praising the team’s performance and encouraging players to remain proud of their achievements.
In a message shared by Kensington Palace, Prince William said he was “gutted” by the result but praised the squad’s determination and spirit throughout the tournament.
“The fight and belief you have shown has inspired us all. The most complete England team in a tournament. Hold your heads high,” he wrote.
The statement was signed “W”, indicating it was a personal message from Prince William, who serves as the patron of the Football Association and has regularly shown his support for English football.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer also reacted to the defeat, saying he was disappointed by the result but proud of the team’s efforts.
“The passion and energy they’ve shown representing the badge has made us all proud,” Starmer said.
England’s hopes of reaching the World Cup final ended after Argentina scored two late goals to secure victory and set up a final meeting with Spain.
The match in Atlanta was goalless at half-time before England forward Anthony Gordon gave his side the lead with a 55th-minute goal. However, Argentina responded strongly, scoring twice late in the match to complete the comeback.
Prince William, who is known for his love of football and is often seen supporting Aston Villa FC, thanked everyone involved in the team’s campaign.
“Thank you to everyone on and off the pitch, for an incredible tournament,” his statement added.
The wider Royal Family also shared messages of support for England’s players following the defeat.
A post from the official Royal Family account offered condolences to captain Harry Kane and the squad, sharing an image of Kane embracing Jude Bellingham after the final whistle.
“While you Three Lions may be licking your wounds today, you remain the pride of a nation – and will rise again,” the message said.
The defeat also featured in Sir Keir Starmer’s final address to the House of Commons as prime minister, where he referenced the team’s preparation and the nation’s hopes ahead of the knockout match.
Following the final whistle, Starmer said the result was not what supporters wanted but praised the players for their commitment.
“Tonight wasn’t the result we all hoped for. But this England team has given it their all,” he said.
Despite falling short of reaching the final, England’s campaign received widespread praise, with supporters and officials highlighting the team’s progress, resilience and ability to unite fans across the country.
The messages from political leaders and the Royal Family reflected national pride in the squad’s journey, with hopes that the team can build on the experience in future international tournaments.
